Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish celebration commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. It honors the miracle of the temple’s menorah burning for eight days with only a single day’s supply of oil. During Hanukkah, families light the menorah, recite special prayers, and enjoy traditional foods such as latkes and sufganiyot. This joyous holiday also includes games, gifts, and gatherings, emphasizing themes of faith, resilience, and the triumph of light over darkness.

Our Hanukkah Happening

Society Hill Synagogue’s 5784 Hanukkah Happening brought together 352 revelers of all ages, including our Latke Brigade — 8 congregants who made close to 1,000 (!) amazing gluten-free latkes from scratch — and Hebrew School and Playschool teachers who delighted attendees with dreidel games, Hanukkah art projects, and photos with Mr. Latke. This year, we added the “Ugly Hanukkah Sweater” contest!
Thanks for spreading the light with us, and a huge thank you to our awesome custodians and all of our staff and volunteers! Happy Hanukkah!
